University of Maryland University College’s Cybersecurity Program Named Top Cybersecurity Higher Education Program in U.S.

ADELPHI, Md. (April 18, 2018) – The Cybersecurity Program at University of Maryland University College (UMUC) was recognized by the 2018 SC Awards as Best Cybersecurity Higher Education Program across the nation. Awards were announced at the SC Awards 2018 gala on April 17, 2018 in San Francisco.

“UMUC has been a leader in cybersecurity education for a while, and we have always been committed to ensuring that students gain the skills and knowledge-base that today’s employers need to secure their organization,” said Dr. Emma Garrison-Alexander, vice dean of the cybersecurity program at UMUC. “As one of the first institutions to offer full degree certificates in cybersecurity, it is an honor to be recognized as a leader in the field,” she added.

Entries were judged by an elite group of IT Security pros representing a cross-section of SC Media’s audience comprising information and IT security personnel at large, medium and small enterprises from all major vertical markets—including financial services, health care, government, retail, education and other sectors. Winners were hand-picked by a panel of judges for their outstanding service, qualifications and advancements to the cybersecurity industry.

Recognized throughout the cybersecurity industry as the crowning achievement for IT security professionals and products, the awards honor the accomplishments of companies, educational institutions and information security professionals who are considered the best in the industry at protecting today’s enterprises from risks and threats.

UMUC was recognized for its commitment to excellence and innovation inside and outside the classroom—notably by the NSA and DHS as a certified Center of Academic Excellence in IA Education and Digital Forensics, and as the home of the Cyber Padawans, its world-champion hacking competition team.

The UMUC Cybersecurity program was selected over five finalists, including programs from Champlain College, Iowa State University, Regent University and TCAT Shelbyville.
