Mark J. Gerencser spent 31 years with Booz Allen Hamilton as a recognized strategy and technology expert and senior partner. He led Booz Allen’s 20,000-consultant Government Business in the U.S. and abroad and, before retiring in 2013, served as the managing partner of its Global Commercial Business, addressing energy, healthcare, finance, and industrial sectors. Gerencser has since venture funded several start-ups, including PC services company CyberSpa, encryption and networking company Welbeck Security, and infrastructure innovation company Multi-Flex Pipe Systems. He also serves as an independent director on the corporate boards of Alion Science and Technology, Sotera Defense Solutions, and Orion Systems Integrators.
Gerencser was nominated by the White House and confirmed by the Senate Armed Services Committee as a member of the National Security Education Board, chaired by the Secretary of Defense. He is a member of Business Executives for National Security and served on its Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He also was chair of the Board of Visitors for University of Maryland University College, where he received the President’s Medal for leadership and vision in advancing higher education.
Notable studies and activities that Gerencser led or contributed to include “Acquisition Reform” for the Office of the Secretary of Defense; “America’s Energy Resurgence Study” for the Bipartisan Policy Center; “Cyber Strategic Inquiry” for the U.S. Department of Defense; “Next Generation Air Traffic Control” for the Federal Aviation Administration; “Warrior Gateway Project” for the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff; “Micro-Grid Energy Study” for Military Bases; and “Alternative Business Models in Education” for UMUC.
Gerencser coauthored the Washington Post bestseller Megacommunities: How Leaders of Government, Business and Non-Profits Can Tackle Today’s Global Challenges Together. He has authored numerous articles on technology, business, and public policy (Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Robotic Vehicles, Toward a Digital Democracy, Re-Imagining America’s Infrastructure, Big Data Analytics) and its impact on business or national security.
According to Vital Speeches of the Day, Gerencser’s keynote speech at the 2009 Cybersecurity Symposium represented one of “the best thoughts of the best minds on current national questions.” He has appeared on numerous television news programs (including MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, and C-SPAN) and in print media (including the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and Baltimore Sun).
Consulting Magazine named him one of the Top 25 Most Influential Consultants in the World and ExecutiveBiz named him one of the Top 10 Game Changers in Washington D.C. In 2014 he was inducted into the Wash100, the premier group of private and public sector leaders selected by Executive Mosaic’s organizational and editorial leadership as the most influential figures recognized for vision, innovation and achievement for American citizens.
